Conference Overview:The Twelfth International Conference on Time-Resolved Vibrational Spectroscopy (TRVS XII) was held at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg, Maryland in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. This conference, first held in Lake Placid, NY in 1982, has traditionally been a forum for presenting the latest developments in spectroscopic research utilizing Vibrational spectroscopies. Each of the previous eleven conferences has attracted approximately 150 participants from all over the world. TRVS XII hosted 94 attendees, including 45 students and young investigators. Recent research in time-resolved vibrational spectroscopic methods and applications was covered, including the following topical areas:

Format: The conference consisted of invited plenary lectures, invited talks, and contributed talks and posters. For the complete final program, please click on the link above. We met in NIST's 300 seat auditorium and adjacent meeting rooms that included conference facilities, employee lounge and projection equipment. Sessions were held in a serial format in the mornings and after lunch. Lunch was provided at NIST and included in the conference Registration Fee.

Conference Proceedings Book (14 MB PDF Excursion and Banquet: An afternoon excursion to visit museums and historic sites in Washington, D.C., occurred on Wednesday afternoon, May 25th. Buses took us to the Mall and then to the International Spy Museum for a group tour, followed by our Meeting Banquet. Prof. George Atkinson (U.S. State Department & University of Arizona) spoke to us about recent scientific discoveries and world science perspectives at the after-dinner speech. Poster Sessions and Sponsor Exhibits: We also used an area adjacent to the auditorium for evening poster presentations. The NIST Employee Lounge was used for contributing companies to display literature or small exhibits. Student/Postdoctoral/Young Investigator Awards: The NIST Physics Laboratory kindly provided funds to partially subsidize graduate student, postdoctoral and young investigator attendees' meeting expenses. All requests were granted from accumulated meeting funds (of up to $500 each). Student/Postdoctoral Research Excellence Travel Awards: Four awards were given to recipients based upon their poster originality, innovation, and content. The awards were announced and the recipients (Andrew Jaye, Renee JiJi , Sohshi Yabumoto, and Kunohiko Ishii) were presented with a plaque and travel reimbursement by Newport/Spectra Physics representatives at the conclusion of the conference Friday afternoon. Session/Talk DVDs: All sessions were digitally taped throughout the week and converted to DVD format. If you would like a copy of a particular talk or session, please contact the conference chairs and they will make copies and send them to you. TRVS XIII in Munich, Germany 2007: The next few years following the TRVS XII meeting promise to generate remarkable new developments in the field of time-resolved vibrational spectroscopy. We will be holding our next meeting, TRVS XIII near Munich, Germany in 2007. This meeting will be hosted by Profs. Wolfgang Zinth and Alfred Laubereau. Please feel free to contact the TRVS XIII conference co-chairs for more details about the next conference.
In Memoriam: The laser community lost a stalwart with the recent passing on February 19, 2005 of Ralph L. Swaine. We remember his service and contributions to the laser community. |
