Tourism to the Washington DC area surges at the end of March and early April, as the onset of relatively good weather leads to the blooming of cherry blossoms. In 2006, the Washington Post reported that the two-week Cherry Blossom Festival was expected to draw an additional 1 million tourists to the area. In 2007, the Festival begins the week following the close of the APiP, but if we are lucky, the blossoms will begin their bloom before the end of the conference. Throughout the year, entrance is free to many of the museums, such as the National Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian. The Smithsonian is the world's largest complex of museums and includes the National Air and Space Museum (reportedly the most visited museum on earth).

A concise overview of the Arts and Culture offerings in Washington, D.C. is available online. Note that some of the more popular free attractions mentioned in this overview still require advance tickets (no charge unless purchased through a commercial agent), including the Washington Monument, tours of the White House, parts of the Holocaust Museum, and some special exhibits at the National Gallery of Art. A listing of the museums is given by the D.C. Chamber of Commerce.

Another guide to the Smithsonian Museums and Parks is available online in English, German, French, Spanish, and Japanese as well.
