Driving directions.
Many visitors find that the most efficient mode of transportation in the
Washington-Baltimore Metropolitan area is by rental car, particularly if they
intend to explore the area widely. Traffic can be heavy at times, but most of
the roads are fairly easy to navigate. The conference is in a suburban area
with public transportation available but generally not as convenient or as
frequent as it is downtown. Even downtown, the
Washington subway is not as densely laid
out as the subways in many other major urban areas (particularly in Europe), so
getting to some of the most interesting areas of the city requires an extended
walk or supplemental cab ride (readily available, with fares based on a
zone system,
rather than metered rates). Many of the tourist sites, however, are most
conveniently reached by subway directly. During Cherry
Blossom Season, traffic near the downtown tidal basin area is often slowed
to a standstill.
Super-Shuttle, 1-800-258-3826, offers commercial van service from Dulles
International, Ronald Reagan National, and Baltimore-Washington International
Airports to Gaithersburg. Call for reservations.
The Washington Metro has subway service to Gaithersburg. Metro can be boarded
at National Airport. Take a Yellow Line train marked "Mount Vernon
Square" to Gallery Place and transfer to a Red Line train marked
"Shady Grove" to the Shady Grove station. Service is every 6 to
15 minutes, depending on the time of day. The travel time from National to
Shady Grove is about 50 minutes. Taxis are available from the Shady Grove
Metro station to area hotels.
NIST shuttle van operates for official visitors and conference attendees from
the Shady Grove Metro station to NIST. The van leaves the Shady Grove station
on the quarter and three-quarter hour (e.g., 8:15, 8:45 ... 4:45, 5:15 ) from
the East Side parking lot.
Roundtrip bus transportation while in Gaithersburg
Roundtrip bus transportation will be provided between the Marriott Gaithersburg
Washingtonian hotel and NIST each day in the morning and evening. Directions to
NIST can be found at the visitor link from the main NIST web page at
www.nist.gov. The visitor web page is also a
good source for information regarding transportation, local accommodations,
weather information, area tourism, etc.
Inclement Weather
Infrequently, the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area is affected by severe
weather. When this occurs, a decision may be made to either close the NIST
facility or delay arrival times for employees. If inclement weather forces NIST
to be closed or delayed, this conference will be affected. For updates on the
status on NIST's opening, please call the NIST Status Line at (301) 975-8000 or
1-800-437-4385 x8000. This status line is updated by 5:30 a.m. on a daily
basis, when necessary.
