TECHNICAL ACTIVITIES 1999 - NISTIR 6438

NIST's newest primary frequency standard, NIST-F1. This cesium-fountain frequency standard currently has a frequency uncertainty less than 3 parts in 10¹⁵. Further development should bring this uncertainty down by at least a factor of 3. The fountain-toss region is enclosed in the cylindrical vertical magnetic shields. The laser systems used for atom cooling and manipulation are on the optical table and intermediate level platform.
